For any team to excel, instilling the culture of Family is key. The culture of family ensures that everybody has a sense of responsibility for all that happens in the family. Many challenges in choirs today stem from a lack of this very culture. Too often, members shy away from accountability, giving polished excuses for missed rehearsals or unscored songs, for example. However, when a chorister understands their purpose in the choir and sees themselves as a part of the choir, they elevate the choir.
It is important for every member to have a mindset that says, “I may not be the team lead, but I’m responsible for what happens in the choir.” If a fellow member goes against the guiding principles of the choir, a responsible chorister addresses it before the leader hears of it. If a soprano singer makes a mistake during worship leading, having a sense of responsibility is what makes other team members see it as a collective mistake and quickly swop in to cover, rather than pointing fingers. Picture a soldier who refuses to help a fallen comrade simply because the commander hasn’t given a direct order. Irresponsibility in a team is dangerous.
Build, Don’t Break
As a leader, you can help your members grow by giving them opportunities to take responsibility. And responsibility doesn’t mean only singing, it also involves attending to the needs of the team, and also caring for other members of the team.
Leadership fails without responsibility. Great strategies are useless if members won’t follow through. If you have to cajole members to care for the team, they haven’t embraced responsibility. But don’t flip out. Teach them. Guide them. Mentor them. Watch them closely and give them opportunities to grow.
In Summary
Whether at an individual or group level, irresponsibility will crumble any choir. But instilling the value of taking up responsibility will take your team further, faster, and with less stress.
If you’re asking, How do I instill a sense of responsibility in my choir members? This next post is for you. Let’s go!
