HANDLING INSECURITY IN LEADERSHIP

Written by W.N. Vincent

My journey as a music director has been a humbling experience.

There are times I see what God really wants to do in my choir, for example, and the person he uses to accomplish his work is not me, the leader.

Truth is, while it is a good desire to always want to be at the center of every great move of God in your choir and in the Church, you must be willing to recognise certains areas you do not have the strength or experience to handle, as it relates to the Music and Ministry, and the need for someone else to step in.

Over time I have learnt to be humble enough to give an expert, or even a member of my choir who is better in some areas (tested and proven), the platform to handle sessions I am not led to handle, or simply put, I am not graced to handle.

Sometimes not knowing when to move aside for someone who is more knowledgeable in an area to take over, will be more of a hindrance to the growth of your choir members, (and even your growth) than a blessing. And this could be an evidence of pride.

It is important that you as the leader, do not allow your choir to settle for less because you want to be seen as the ‘best’ in their eyes. It’s not about you!

If you cannot handle some areas, look for someone who can, and while the session is on, sit down and learn too!

Even if it means paying for external trainings (as far as there are resources for that, or you want to sacrifice yours for their growth) let them go. This is wisdom.

We must learn to embrace collaboration.

The idea is not to be seen as the best music director or choir leader in the world. No!
The idea is not to always be in their face, even when you are struggling to impact what you have not gotten mastery over.
No!

The idea is to give them what they need per time and season by the leading and inspiration of God, and sometimes it may not come from you, but you will have to make room for it to come from someone else.

For this to happen, you need to kill the mindset of, “if I bring an external person, they may think I know less and follow the other person”.

If you are bothered about this, then you really do know less.

You need to be humble and secure in your calling, gifting, skills, and leadership.

Insecurity will weigh you down and stop you from doing all that God has called you to do.

If you are battling with insecurity in leadership, I encourage you to learn to put your trust in God, focus on your strengths, and surround yourself with people who compliment your weakness.

You will not fail my friend. 1 Thes 5:24
