Listening to music has therapeutic effects. Music Therapy is the use of music to reduce physical, mental and emotional discomfort. But, does listening to Christian music (not just any music) have any extra benefits?
Christian music or gospel music, in this case, is not just a song with ‘clean lyrics’ (void If vulgarity) but a song that glorifies Jesus and carries the breath and anointing of God.
So, let’s get into the thick of things. Seven (7) benefits of listening to Christian music.
1. Life is Communicated
Like I said before, Christian music carries the breath and anointing of God. It is not necessarily one that makes mention of the name of Jesus. The Life communicated in the song through the lyrics or the sounds is as important as the beauty of the Music.
A song can have the name, Jesus, but does the song communicate the life of Jesus? Is there an impartation of the life of God to the listener?
You will always feel some ventilation (lifting) in your spirit when you listen to Christian music that carries the breath of God.
This is why it is important to pay attention to the songs we listen to as Christians (Philippians 4:8) because a man can be set free or held captive by the music he listens to.
2. Strength is Communicated
There was a time when I had challenges in several areas of my life; financial, academics, relationships, etc. The stress was taking its toll on me and I grew weak by the day.
Honestly, I had lost the strength to study my Bible or pray as I wanted to. One day as I scrolled through my music playlist on my phone, I came across a song by Don Moen, I will be still.
I put that song on repeat for about 2 weeks, and every time I listened to it I felt my strength increase, and I felt my faith and hope come alive.
We receive strength, hope, and faith when we listen to Christian music. (Psalm 81:1-2)
Are you feeling weak in your spirit? Play a song that emphasizes the help of God, and engage in prayers. The strength of God will fill you up.
3. We Are Reminded of God’s Word and Promises
It is a normal occurrence to be going through heartbreak caused by a failed relationship or the death of a loved one, and we attempt to drown our sorrows in a song. But in no song can we find help through such dark times than in Christian music, why?
Embedded in Christian music is God’s word to us in such moments.
You will agree with me that some of the scriptures we remember today are in some of the songs we sang as little children, in church.
You may forget most of what the preacher shared in his sermon on Sunday, but you will most likely remember the song the choir sang in church (or some of the lyrics).
In my time of challenge, the line that kept me going was in Don Moen’s song, “I will be still and know that you are God”. (Psalms 46:10).
Are you going through a hard time? Listen to what God’s word says about that situation in a Christian song.
4. Access to Revelation, Direction, and Insight
One day, three kings joined forces to fight a common enemy. They journeyed for days and soon they couldn’t find water. They decided to call a prophet to hear what God would say about the situation. On getting there, the prophet requested for a harpist to play so he could gain access to the voice of God. (2 Kings 3:1-15)
Sometimes when I’m confused and needing direction here is what I do, and it works. I play a spiritual song (Ephesians 5:19) and then I begin to pray in the Spirit. The answer I need always comes, either right then or at a later time.
King David enjoyed prophetic insights about his life and what was to come after his time when he either ministered to God or he was ministered to by other minstrels, as seen throughout the book of Psalms.
Are you in a fix? Are you confused and needing direction? Do you need insight into a matter?
Then prayerfully engage in some Christian songs while listening for the voice of God.
5. The Love and Nearness of God to Us is Emphasised
God is never far from us. In fact, He lives in us and wants to communicate with us regularly. But there are those moments in life when it may seem like God is far away, and we may feel all alone.
It could be when you just embarked on a new assignment or when you just hit a sharp bend in life.
Many times as I listen to Christian songs that emphasize the love, goodness, and faithfulness of God, and as I sing along to them, I sense a lifting in my spirit and I am engulfed in God’s love.
Memories of the times God came through for me begin to flood my mind and His love for me is emphasized. I am reminded that I’m not alone.
What’s that song that emphasizes God’s love for you?
6. Listening to Christian Music Facilitates Spiritual Alignment
Listening to Christian music facilitates spiritual alignment (tuning us from the physical realm into the spirit). Hence, the presence and power of God are emphasized because of that shift in the atmosphere.
Christian music can also become a means of transport into the spiritual realm to access certain spiritual experiences and encounters, as in the case of the prophet (2 Kings 3) and King Saul amid the prophets (1 Samuel 19:24).
Music/sound is a spiritual language (means of communication and transport).
7. Christian Music Carries God’s Power to Deliver
Do you remember the story of young David playing his instrument and the evil spirit leaving King Saul? (1 Samuel 16:14-23) It wasn’t a fluke then – it still isn’t a fluke today.
As I mentioned before, a piece of Christian music carries the life of God. This means what Jesus could do when he walked the earth, a song that carries his life would do also.
Are you sick? You can be healed when you listen, with faith in the power of God to heal, to a song that talks about God’s healing power. Are you having any form of discomfort? You can also receive deliverance when you listen to a Christian song, with faith.
There are countless testimonies of bad habits that ended when people encountered God while playing Christian music.
Many other benefits are in listening to Christian music. Christian music has some of the greatest talents and musical geniuses. Lyrical content that teaches sound theology, and contains lessons for life.
We are in a world where there are distractions on every side. Rather than open up your spirit to songs that do not emphasize God’s desire to reveal Himself to you, or your desire to walk and stay with God, why not fill your music playlist with songs that will help you stay focused on God!
I’ll leave you with a scripture.
Ephesians 5:18-19
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Stay blessed, beloved.
