FOUNDATION: A Deeper Understanding for Ministry

written by W.N Vincent

When we say, “God is our foundation,” what do we really mean?

The word Foundation carries several meanings. One of the most immediate definitions we often recall is:

- the lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level. (dictionary.com)

While this is accurate, in trying to understand God’s perspective as the Foundation of our lives and ministry, He desires to be seen as much more than just the “load-bearing part.” Although foundational to the structure’s stability and longevity, the foundation is hidden in the ground—often old, dirty, and overlooked. It rarely captures attention when people admire the beauty and glory of a house. This tendency reflects the nature of man—forgetful.

God is Our Foundation

God wants us to see Him as the foundation of our lives and ministry in a broader, richer sense.

Another definition of foundation is:

- an underlying basis or principle upon which every other thing is built. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Viewing God through this lens is crucial. Why? Because it is easy to remember God as our foundation only when we carry a burden—when we face challenges or struggles beyond our control. Yet, God desires to be more than just the base we call upon in difficult times.

He wants us to recognize Him not only as the foundation but also as the pillar that upholds us, the roof that shelters us, and the aesthetic that beautifies our lives. God is not merely a part of the house; He is the entire house — the source of strength, protection, and grace.

No wonder Paul declared,

“For in Him we live and move and exist [that is, in Him we actually have our being]…”

Acts 17:28 AMP.

Outside of Him, we cannot live, move, or even exist (John 1:13; Colossians 1:16).

How Does This Understanding Impact Our Ministry as Music Ministers?

Far too often, we think do not think it’s important to seek God in situations we can handle. For example, when it’s a project we can handle, we don’t seek God’s direction, we just sort it out. But when it’s beyond our control, we remember God exists. Another example is, many people do not wait on God with the same passion, hunger, and intensity to see a congregation blessed, when it is a small gathering, as they do when it is a major or larger gathering.

This mindset reveals a subtle pride and a lack of dependence on God. True ministry—at any scale—must rely wholly on the Spirit of God, not our own power, understanding, or experience. (Zechariah 4:6)

God is sovereign in every moment and situation. He must be seen and glorified in every aspect of our lives and ministry. Therefore, we must be in constant need of His help.

Understanding this transforms our approach. Whether ministering on stage or off, in small or large settings, the grace and strength of God are essential.

Remember, God is not simply a hidden foundation beneath us. He is the very foundation upon which the entire structure of your life and ministry stands. Our approach to Ministry must be, God as:

  • The pillar that holds our lives upright (Psalm 27:1), bringing balance to our days
  • The roof that shelters and protects us (Psalm 18:2)
  • The one who adds color and beauty to our destiny (Isaiah 61:3)

My prayer is that God continues to energize your spirit, stirring genuine hunger and thirst for Him. May you see His power manifest in your life and in His Church, relying on Him fully—in ministry, family, relationships, finances, and every aspect of life.

Shalom.
