BENEFITS OF SCORING A SONG

written by W.N Vincent

Do we get any benefit(s) from scoring songs?

How many songs have you scored since the start of the year? 10? 30? 50?

For some vocalists and musicians, one of the many reasons for scoring a song is because that is the song the choir director selected, and so you score it out of obligation. The list goes on and on!

It is important to note that if you are seeking to achieve any significant growth in your music, you must follow a strategic process or system to fully benefit from scoring a song.

Whenever we score songs—whether as soloists, vocalists, or instrumentalists—we often tend to approach the song to barely get-it-over-with-on-D-day. Such a mentality will not open you up to the benefits of scoring a scong.

There is a big difference between scoring songs just to sing/perform and scoring songs particularly to learn and grow.

This is where most musicians and vocalists miss it. If this is you, you’re not alone. All you need to do is to let me walk you through this ONE secret of scoring songs for your growth!

You score a song to learn the technique used in the song!

When you attempt to score the songs of an artist, the goal should be to get some basic ingredients that make up their voice and techniques used in singing (for vocalists). As you intentionally score the songs and the vocalist’s mannerism, you become exposed to techniques utilized.

It gets interesting to know that you can learn, master, and apply what you’ve garnered to any other music or song you’ll sing later on.

This is one great benefit of scoring a song, and it is how growth happens. If you strategically score songs with your growth in mind, you will have better results.

Don’t just score songs; be strategic.

Know and have a reason for scoring a particular song. Do you want to work on your breathing? Pick songs that emphasize breath control and work on them.  Do you want to work on your ability to sing vocal scale—riffs and runs—pick songs that emphasize that!

Before you begin to score a song, prioritize these questions:

  • Why this song?
  • What do I want to get out of it?

Answering them will lead you on how to become more strategic in the songs you pick to score!

Cheers to the growth of your music and ministry!
