Research has proven that listening to music has therapeutic effects. But does listening to Christian music—not just any “clean” music—carry deeper benefits? The answer is yes. Christian music is more than a song without vulgarity. It glorifies Jesus and carries the breath and anointing of God. Christian music creates hope, not just in any external factor, but a hope that is deeply rooted in the promises of God, written in His Word.
Here are 7 life-changing benefits of listening to Christian music:
1. It Communicates Life
Christian music carries the breath of God. It’s not just about mentioning “Jesus” in lyrics. We have many songs like that out there, today. What desire does the song stir up in your heart as you isten to it? A desire to abandon your sinful ways and commit to a life of pleasing Jesus? A desire to spend time in prayer and in the study of God’s Word, just to know God? . Beyond the lyrics, spiritual life and trnsformation comes by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit (John 6:63). The life of God is what impacts, not just the words or the music. Anointed songs communicate the life of God, lift your spirit, and impacts upon your desires.
2. It Communicates Strength
In 2018 I experienced some tough times as an undergraduate student. It felt like I had hit rock bottom in my academics, the pressure was intense. But, God used songs like Don Moen’s “Be Still My Soul” to lift my heart and restore my strength. Christian music has the power to stir up hope and faith when you feel low. (Psalm 81:1–2)
3. Reminder of God’s Word and Promises
You know how you may not remember a particular Bible verse when going through a challenging phase, but one song is just impressed on your heart? Christian songs are built on Scripture and God’s promises are found in Scripture. Even when sermons fade, melodies linger. Lyrics like “I will be still and know that you are God” in Don Moen’s Be Still My Soul, reminds us of God’s word in Psalm 46:10, and this stays with us, bringing us comfort during difficult seasons.
4. Access to Revelation and Direction
Worship clears mental and emotional fog because it takes the focus off you (your feelings, your needs, etc.) and magnifies God in the process. Just like Elisha in 2 Kings 3:15, prophetic insight often flows as you listen to spiritual songs. If you’re confused or seeking direction, play a worship song, meditate on God’s Word, pray, and listen for God’s voice.
5. Energize Consciousness
Ever felt alone or abandoned? Songs that magnify God’s love remind you that He’s close. They help you remember His goodness and reassure you that you’re not alone.
When you are pressed on many sides, it is easy to forget that you, for example, have Angels assigned to help you and ensure that you don’t fall (Psalm 91:11). Just one song is enough to energize your consciousness of what God has said about you, or what riches in Christ you have at your disposal to surmount the highest mountain. One moment you think you are alone in your car or house, and the next moment you’re in tears or shouting for joy because your consciousness of the presence of God just got energized. How? A song communicated the tangible presence and the life of God.
6. Spiritual Alignment
Sounds are instruments of journeying. Christian music tunes your spirit to God’s frequency. It helps shift your focus from the natural to the spiritual. Just like Saul among the prophets (1 Samuel 19:24), you can have deeper spiritual encounters through music, especially when you listen to Christian Music meditatively and consciously.
7. Power to Deliver
David played his harp and Saul’s torment lifted (1 Samuel 16:14–23). Paul and Silas prayed and sang and the prison doors opened up (Acts 16:25-32).
That same power exists today. God, through anointed music, can breaks chains, heals, and sets people free—physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and this can be your experience.
Final Thoughts
We live in a noisy world full of distractions. What you allow into your ears and heart matters. Fill your atmosphere with music that builds faith and heighthens your consciousness of the nearness of God.
Scripture for Reflection:
Ephesians 5:18–19 (KJV)
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”
What’s that miracle God did in your life, through a Christian song? Feel free to share!
