WORSHIP: A Mood or Not?

“Let us be in the mood of worship.”

Is worship really a Mood?

I always feel uncomfortable when worship leaders use the line, “let us be in the mood of worship” just before they start to sing, and I feel this is partly because they do not understand what WORSHIP means, or to be fair, they do but are not aware of the implications of those exact words.

I’d like to start by saying, WORSHIP is not a MOOD.

A Mood

The word ‘mood’ is used to imply a ‘moment or time to rise and sing a song of praise or worship to God’.

The downside to this is the psychological response that the word draws from the congregation.

The word MOOD means a temporary state of mind or feeling.

This means everyone can be distracted by, or occupied with something else and when it is time to sing, they get in the ‘mood of worship’. And after the singing is over, they get out of that ‘mood’ and go back to those distractions.

The totality of our actions when we gather as believers is Worship to God.

Worship is not only when the choir sings. Worship is also when the ushers faithfully direct members of the church (and visitors alike) to their seats.

Do you see those times the hospitality team of your church attends to new members? That is also worship.

What happens when the congregation listens keenly to the testimonies of the brethren and their faith is stirred up is Worship.

Worship is when the congregation lifts their voice to pray in unity of heart and purpose.

When the word of God is preached and it is cemented in the hearts of every worshipper, that is worship.

Worship is everything we do when we gather together on a Sunday morning, or Wednesday evening, including the SINGING.

When we come to church on a Sunday morning, what we come to do is to Worship. Singing to God is an act of worship. But beyond singing, every other thing we do is an act of worship.

Romans 12:1 (MSG)

“Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering.”

What is Worship?

Worship is response to something or someone that you have placed value in, and have esteemed higher than yourself and all else. And this response should be lived out daily.

Hence, Worship is not in songs and words alone. It is in living, – a lifestyle.

This should be the mindset and culture we must strive to imbibe in our congregation as worship leaders.

I pray our worship of God goes beyond the songs we sing on Sunday morning. I pray it it becomes the life we live every day.

Best Regards.
